KITTERY, Maine — A firefighter suffered serious injuries to his foot after it was caught in an aerial ladder Monday morning.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the firefighter’s foot got caught as the ladder was being adjusted by hydraulics. The firefighter was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery on his toes and appears to be doing well.

Another firefighter suffered a superficial cut on his hand while battling the blaze.

The firefighter’s wife recently opened a coffee shop and members of the department plan to help her with chores until he’s back on his feet, according to the report.

Fire officials said the fire started after someone fell asleep while smoking.

The two residents in the house were not injured.
