SPRINGFIELD, Pa. — A firefighter comforted a dying dog after he and his crew rescued it from underneath a log.

Philly.com reported that firefighter Bob Tracey and the Springfield Fire Company crew rescued Buddy, a 12-year-old Gordon setter mix, who was stuck under a log.

His owners searched the area, called the police and put notices on online bulletins after Buddy escaped from their secured yard, but they were unable to locate him.

Police then responded to a call about a dog trapped under a log. They called the fire department after a failed attempt to climb down a slope to move the log.

“I jumped down in there,” said Tracey, noting that the area was very muddy. “We started moving rocks, leaves and dirt.”

Tracey speculated Buddy was searching for shelter during a storm and became trapped for at least 24 hours.

“I was just scared he was going to die right there in front of me,” Tracey said.

The dog was taken to an animal hospital and reunited with his family.

Due to Buddy’s pre-existing health conditions, the animal hospital eventually euthanized him.

“I’m glad we were able to help,” Tracey said.
