SAN DIEGO — Firefighters saved a pair of puppies from an apartment that caught fire Thursday afternoon, a fire officials said.

Flames charred a kitchen and sent smoke through the second-story unit on Village Glen Drive near Castle Glen about 4:30 p.m. Firefighters scooped up the dogs and took them outside, and doused the blaze in about 15 minutes.

The residents, a woman and her child, weren’t home when the fire sparked. Firefighters “cuddled” the pups until their owners returned, said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Lee Swanson.

The fire caused about $100,000 in damage to the apartment and about $50,000 in damage to it’s contents. An adjacent unit was damaged by smoke.

The occupants of both apartments were displaced and assisted by the Red Cross.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental, caused by an electric burner that was left on, Swanson said.
