Firefighters save 5 cats after receiving animal oxygen masks

After a family was unable to save their pets from a house fire, crews used their newly-donated animal oxygen masks to save the cats

TAYLOR, Pa. — Firefighters saved five cats from a house fire thanks to their newly-donated animal oxygen masks.

FOX4KC reported that the Nykaza family had to evacuate their badly-burned home and were unable to rescue their pets.

“Somebody that I never met before knocked on the door and said, ‘You need to get out, the house is on fire,’” Marcia Nykaza said. “I just kind of looked at him, like, OK, and I ran back into the kitchen and I could see all the fire coming from that side.”

When crews responded, they went into the home to look for the family’s six animals. A Pomeranian died, but five cats were pulled from the house.

The crew credits the lifesaving rescue to their new animal oxygen masks donated on Wednesday.

“When we heard the call go out, our representative that actually got them said, ‘Hey, don’t forget the pet masks,’ so I actually grabbed them and put them on my truck on my way out the door,” EMS provider Bruce Beauvais said. “We want to help humans, but you know what? Everybody has fur babies at home. So, they want to help them as well. Today was a great example of us working together with the veterinary community to get this done, and it really worked out well for these cats.”
