MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — After 45 cats, five dogs and several other animals were killed in a house fire Jan. 10, a firefighter adopted one of the dogs that survived.
The couple living inside the home escaped the fire without injury; one cat and 13 dogs were rescued and transported to an animal shelter, reported FOX 35.
Brevard County Fire Rescue firefighter Woodrow Sweet adopted Smokie, an Australian shepherd, after rescuing him from the blaze.
“Woody was so moved by the loss of animal life that [following] morning he adopted one of the surviving dogs,” wrote the department on their Facebook page.
