SELLS, Ariz. — One firefighter died and two were injured when their brush truck rolled over. The firefighter’s name was not released; all three were working for the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
“This is a tragic incident that reminds us that firefighters risk their lives every day to protect the public,” Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Ned Norris Jr. told The Arizona Daily Star. “The hearts of the Tohono O’odham go out to this individual, his family and friends, and to all personnel fighting the Montezuma Fire.”
The fatal crash occurred about 8 a.m. Friday.
The Montezuma fire, which burned 1,700 acres of the Baboquivari Mountain range southwest of Tucson, is being managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. KOVA News 4 reports that about 164 firefighters are battling the blaze.
The 10-day-old fire is 90 percent under control.
