IPSWICH, Mass. — A Massachusetts fire chief was placed on paid leave over the weekend after he was arrested on domestic assault charges.

The Boston Globe reports Ipswich Fire Chief Gregory Gagnon was already facing assault and battery and witness intimidation charges in court when he was arrested Saturday morning for allegedly choking a woman in 2016.

Authorities told the newspaper they learned about the alleged domestic assault after Gagnon was arrested Thursday. Saturday’s arrest involved an incident in 2016 and the same woman he is accused of assaulting earlier in the week, the Boston Globe reports.

Gagnon, a 41-year-old Dracut resident, is being held without bail on the new charge. He will be arraigned in Lowell District Court on Monday.

The Eagle-Tribune reports Ipswich town officials placed Gagnon on paid leave for “off duty conduct.”

Gagnon was released without bail after he was arraigned Friday in Lowell District Court for an alleged Sept. 14 assault on a woman, the newspaper reports.
