Fire razes commercial center, injures 1 firefighter

KALIBO, Philippines — A fireman was injured when a blaze of still undetermined origin reduced to ashes a commercial establishment here early Saturday morning.

Totally destroyed was the two-storey building housing the JSY Marketing at the corner of C. Laserna-Regalado Streets in Kalibo, Aklan. The commercial establishment is owned by a Korean trader.

An estimated P1.5 million worth of stock was gobbled up by the fire which lasted for two hours.

Senior Fire Officer 3 Joey Lim of the Kalibo Fire Station said a fire volunteer was slightly injured during the incident.

Lim said firetrucks in the capital town and adjoining municipalities responded to the fire scene after they sounded the general alarm.

‘We declared a general alarm because the old shopping center in the heart of Kalibo which is already considered a landmark for the town is being threatened by fire,” said Lim.

Lim said the general alarm is being called once the fire incident has worsen threatening the surrounding areas and all available fire trucks in the province need to respond during this alarm level category.

Meanwhile, a team of arson prober is thoroughly investigating the incident which broke out as Kalibo braces for the celebration of the Ati-Atihan Festival later this month.
