Former Ky. firefighting student saves house on fire

Hunter Powell found a garden hose and kept the fire from spreading; police suspect a burglar set the fire

RICHMOND, Ky. — A couple is crediting a former fire department student with saving their home Monday morning.

Richmond Register reported that Hunter Powell, who worked with the Madison Fire Department while studying fire science at Eastern Kentucky University, was driving when he saw smoke coming from the home. He drove up to the house and suspected a burglar or arsonist had broken into the house.

He found a garden hose and took it inside to help save items that had been set ablaze. He kept the fire from spreading until firefighters arrived.

Police have taken over the investigation because the fire was caused by arson, according to the report. A jewelry box valued at $6,000 appeared to be the main item taken in the burglary. Investigators believe the incident is related to a string of five other burglary and arsons in the area.

Officials said if Powell hadn’t noticed the fire and taken action, the house likely would have been a total loss.
