Woman charged with arson for setting fire to kill spider

Ginny Griffith was arrested on a charge of aggravated arson because the other half of the duplex was occupied

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A woman is facing arson charges after she allegedly set a small fire in her home Friday while trying to kill a spider.

HutchNews.com reported that firefighters found light smoke coming from the woman’s half of the duplex and some clothing smoldering inside the doorway. They brought the fire under control within minutes.

No one was injured and there was no damage to the structure other than light smoke damage. However, 34-year-old Ginny M. Griffith was arrested on a charge of aggravated arson because the other half of the duplex was occupied.

Griffith told police officers that she used a cigarette lighter to set some towels on fire to kill a spider, according to the report. She is being held in jail in lieu of $7,500 bond.
