NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — Firefighters were responding to a medical call when a patient tried to attack them, according to officials.
NBC San Diego reported that the Chula Vista Fire Department was responding to a call about a man having a seizure.
“Things were pretty normal. We were greeted by family members saying the patient had a medical condition and this was normal with them,” CVFD Fire Capt. David Margetts said.
“He turned around sharply and then started to approach my crew,” Margetts said about the patient. “As he did, he squared up in a very menacing fashion and then started to try to attack us.”
Margetts said the firefighters struggled with the patient and tried to keep him under control so he would not harm himself or others.
“We don’t carry handcuffs or anything to subdue people when we’re out there. We’re simply there to provide a service and help,” Chula Vista Firefighters President Darrell Roberts said.
Margetts said no one was injured, and that a fully-staffed crew is to thank for that.
“We were lucky enough to have enough bodies on scene to appropriately keep this individual from hurting not only us, but from hurting himself or other family members,” Margetts said.
