Ky. Gov. to sign firefighter cancer bill

The bill would allow firefighter deaths from certain kinds of cancer to be considered line of duty deaths

FRANKFURT, Ky. — Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin will sign a firefighter cancer death benefits bill into law.

WTVQ.com reported the Kentucky House passed Senate Bill 195 on Monday, which would give families of firefighters who die from certain types of cancer $80,000 as a line of duty death benefit.

An emergency clause in the bill would allow it to take effect immediately to benefit the families of firefighters currently battling cancer.

Retired Owensboro (Ky.) Battalion Chief David McCrady, who is fighting a fast-growing brain tumor, said his family may be one of many that will benefit from the bill.

“I’ve always pushed to make sure people were safe, so when I went home at the end of the day I knew I’d done everything for them,” McCrady said. “I found out I had cancer just before the first round of legislation and I knew I wouldn’t just be helping myself. I’d be helping the guys coming on after me.”

Gov. Bevin’s spokesperson did not say when he would sign the bill into law.
