CORONA, Calif. — Corona firefighter Roger Williams was extinguishing hot spots in a residential area scorched by the North Fire when the ground gave way and his leg slipped into a smoking pile of embers Saturday afternoon.
“I took a step and next thing I know I’m thigh-deep in this ash pit,” Williams said Sunday from his hospital bed. “I knew right away things weren’t going to go well.”
The Corona fire captain was wearing two layers of fire-resistant pants and immediately removed his leg, but the coals and super-heated air slipped into his pant leg and seared much of the skin between his ankle and hip. The accident caused second-degree burns to 15 percent of his body.
