Community pays off cancer-stricken firefighter’s mortgage

They raised over $100,000 on GoFundMe to help Kevin Sikkema after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor in 2014

JENISON, Mich. — A community rallied together to pay off a firefighter’s mortgage to help his family through his cancer treatment.

Fox17Online reported that firefighter Kevin Sikkema, 35, who has been a firefighter for over 13 years with the Georgetown and Blendon Township (Mich.) Fire Departments, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor in 2014. The cancer is known to cause seizures, which has prevented him from working more than one day a week.

His community pulled together and raised over $100,000 on GoFundMe to pay off his mortgage.

To express their gratitude, he and his wife Amy posted a video to their Facebook page:

The goal has been reached! Over $107,000! Thank you everyone!
