BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. — The family of a firefighter who died of cancer in January will receive his pension after it was decided that his death was job-related.

Patch.com reported that the family of Kevin Hauber, a firefighter who died of colon cancer, was awarded his annual salary of $101,000 by the Buffalo Grove Firefighters Pension Board.

Hauber’s wife and four daughters will receive the pension unless the village appeals the board’s decision within 35 days.

Village manager Dane Bragg said the village’s attorney will review the findings, which will be discussed at a board meeting.

“I would reiterate what we stated after the initial hearing. We were not sure that the pension board’s ruling was consistent with state law,” he said.

“Kevin fought long and hard all while still on the job protecting the people of Buffalo Grove, which was his true passion. He grew up in Buffalo Grove and became a firefighter because his childhood dream was to protect and serve,” the Hauber family said after his death.
