SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. — Firefighters gave a fallen colleague’s son a ride to his first day of kindergarten in a fire truck.
ABC News reported that Cooper Brooks, 5, was driven to school by Sullivan County Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Ty Wallace and Assistant Chief Josh Kemp, fulfilling the wishes of his father, Christopher, who died in May from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash.
Christopher had wanted Cooper to get the experience because his own father had taken him to his first day of school the same way.
“He never forgot it, and his friends thought it was so cool that he and his twin brother got to ride the fire truck to school,” Cooper’s mother, Jessica, said. “He hoped we could make that happen for Cooper.”
“I jumped at the chance because I feel we are all one big family,” Kemp said. “We were in the truck just filled with joy.”
Jessica said Cooper really enjoyed the experience.
“It melted my heart just to see my husband’s wishes being fulfilled, and just remembering him how much it meant to him,” she said. “Cooper is able to extend that memory. It’s bittersweet.”
