FULTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A word that can change the dynamic of any fire call.

A single word that sent a “cold chill” up the spine of Robert Fulton Fire Chief Tracy Tomlinson when it was called out over the radio Wednesday as crews battled a house fire in Fulton Township. “Mayday.” The distress signal went out after a floor collapsed, sending two firefighters tumbling into the basement. “The first thing you think is ‘I want my guys outta there’,” Tomlinson said. “Just get ‘em out.”

The chief said James Rodgers II and Michael Childress weren’t trapped as first thought, but were “a little disoriented” after the fall. The two, both members of Robert Fulton Fire Company, were helped from the home and transported to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment. Tomlinson said they were released from the hospital by early evening.
