JONES COUNTY, Miss. — A firefighter was injured Wednesday after falling through a floor while entering a burning home.
Sharon, Shady Grove, Sandersville and Calhoun volunteer firefighters responded to a house fire after the occupants evacuated the building. Firefighters entered the home to begin their initial interior attack. Upon entering through the front door, one firefighter fell through the floor, which had burned and became unstable.
Sandersville firefighter Chasity Weathersby quickly pulled the firefighter from the floor with the assistance of others. It was Weathersby’s first time performing an interior attack on a structure fire, and her quick actions were deemed “valiant” and “nothing short of heroic,” according to fire officials.
The injured firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to a medical center to be treated. Following the incident, firefighters brought the flames under control and performed overhaul for two hours.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
