Pa. firefighter recovering after fall from roof

Nick Weaver suffered multiple back fractures and spent most of the weekend in the hospital

BENSALEM, Pa. — Bensalem firefighter Nick Weaver was reported to be in good condition after falling from a three-story roof while battling a fire Saturday.

Weaver, 26, was off-duty from his full-time firefighting job with Bensalem Fire Rescue when he responded to a call as a volunteer with Nottingham Fire Co., reported Bucks County Courier Times.

Bensalem Battalion Chief Rob Sponheimer said Monday that Weaver fell from the second-story roof onto a porch roof, and then to the ground while trying to vent the fire.

Weaver had “numerous fractures to his back,” and spent most the weekend in the hospital, said Sponheimer.

Although officials said Weaver’s salary and medical expenses are covered, members of the community have set up a fund to help with costs.

State Rep. Frank Farry, (R-42), who is chief of the Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company, said Weaver’s injuries reflect the importance of ensuring that volunteer firefighters “are not put out financially and medically when injured serving our communities.”

A second firefighter who was taken to the hospital after suffering from chest tightness has since been released.
