SACRAMENTO — A tragic 911 call reveals the panicked pleas for help of a California woman when she crashed her car into a river and became trapped as she slowly sank below the water. Mussarat Chaudhary, a mother of seven who emigrated from Pakistan, drowned in the Sacramento River earlier this month after the emergency dispatcher couldn’t understand her and had to find a translator.

‘Car. Car. River. Car,’ Mussarat Chaudhary can be heard saying through a Punjabi accent. The 911 dispatcher replies: ‘Ma’am, I can’t understand you.’

Chaudhary, 57, was driving home from her job as a dishwasher at a casino when her 2009 Toyota Camry sped off the road and into the river. Her family’s lawyer says she spoke English well, but they fear she may have reverted to her native language in her panic as the car slowly sank into the river, according to the Sacramento Bee.
