Christmas gift turns into monthly ‘Firefighter Appreciation Dinner’

What started as a Christmas gift by Justin Gordon turned into a community-wide effort to deliver food once a month to a fire station

HOUSTON — A man started a monthly tradition of bringing food to a fire station after a Christmas gift idea turned into a community-wide effort.

Click 2 Houston reported that Justin Gordon started delivering food to Houston Fire Department Station 31 as a way to spread holiday cheer.

“My daughter and I delivered a Christmas card to Fire Station 31 and said that as our Christmas gift to them, we’d like to bring them steaks every month to the various different shifts that they have,” Gordon said.

The Christmas gift expanded into a two-year tradition, and other community members have now joined the Gordon family in their efforts.

“People bring pastries, they bring ice cream, rolls, stuffed jalapenos, green bean casserole, all sorts of things,” Gordon said.

The donations even spread to another fire station with the help of a family friend who owns a commercial kitchen, when Gordon said he “talked to her about it to see if she wouldn’t mind kind of spearhead(ing) that fire station and she’s been delivering awesome goodies from her kitchen from day one.”

With all of the people helping, a Facebook group was created to organize each month’s meals. Gordon also said he hopes to turn the group into a nonprofit organization so he can donate to more stations.

“They’re always really excited. They’re super friendly. They’re amazing with the kids. I mean, it’s great,” Gordon said. “They put their lives on the line for us and they also have to see some pretty gruesome stuff as well. So I think that even if it’s just once a month it’s a nice thing that the community can do just to say thanks.”
