WASHINGTON — Queen Anunay became DCFEMS’ first female assistant fire chief in a ceremony Tuesday morning, WUSA 9 reported.
Anunay has more than 30 years of experience. She was in the cadet class of 1991 and most recently led department’s EMS division.
As she spoke Tuesday, her peers cheered.
“I have stood on the shoulders of many giants, men and women of all nationalities, to get to this moment,” said Anunay.
She urged those on the career path to stay the course.
“I hope that this accomplishment can be seen as proof that breaking barriers is possible with discipline and hard work when given the opportunity. And for women aspiring to lead, always, always, BYOE. Bring your own energy to the table.”
