JOPLIN, Mo. — A multi-million budget proposal for preparing the destruction of the 2011 tornado that struck Joplin includes the rebuilding of the town’s two fire stations.
The fire stations will cost $1 million more than insurance and FEMA will pay, according to the Joplin Globe.
Those rebuilding costs have been factored into the $192 million proposal for the 2013 fiscal year by City Manager Mark Rohr.
Rohr suggests using a surplus in the public safety sales tax to cover the $1 million not covered by insurance and FEMA. The city is already receiving $1.8 million dollars combined from insurance and FEMA, but the additional $1 million is needed to make the fire stations larger so they can house more equipment with additions like a decontamination room.
Budget discussions will continue this month when town officials will decide to approve the proposed budget or not.
