SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS, N.J. — A volunteer fire department had its Christmas tree donations stolen over the weekend.

Independent Fire Company No. 1 has been selling trees in an effort to raise funds for maintaining their firehouse, reported CBS New York. Firefighters noticed about $1,000 went missing from their cash register Sunday.

Fire officials said the register was in a fenced-in locked garage.

“I hope you really needed the money. We worked really hard for it, if you needed it this bad to break into a volunteer firehouse,” former Fire Chief Bill Fury said.

Since the theft, members of the community have stepped forward and donated to the company.

The company said they will continue to raise funds, despite the disheartening theft.
