HARTFORD, Conn. — A Hartford firefighter was placed on leave after Fairfield police charged him Wednesday with driving under the influence in connection with a crash earlier this month, officials said.

On Sept. 9, Fairfield police responded to a single vehicle crash on Somerset Avenue. At the time, officers reported they were suspicious the driver, 29-year-old Harry E. Barrett, was under the influence.

Police said at the time, Barrett failed a field sobriety test.

Barrett was taken to Bridgeport Hospital following the crash. Medical records obtained by investigators showed he had a positive drug screening for opiates, cocaine metabolites, and benzodiazepine, police said.

He was charged Wednesday with operating under the influence, failure to drive right and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Hartford fire officials said Barrett is a firefighter with the city. He was placed on unpaid administrative leave pending an internal investigation, Capt. Raul Ortiz said.
