Fire department reopens after insurance, embezzlement issues

A firefighter turned himself in for embezzling an unknown amount of funds; he faces multiple felonies

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — A fire department reopened Tuesday after almost four days of inaction linked to insurance issues.

The Washington Township Fire Department was unable to operate after discovering that insurance premiums for its trucks, station and crews had unknowingly gone unpaid for several months, the Times Recorder reported.

The department, which believed payments were being made, will not face penalties for operating without insurance. Last week, a firefighter turned himself in to authorities for embezzling funds, according to the report.

The firefighter faces multiple felonies for allegedly stealing an unknown amount of money from the department. He has yet to be officially charged.

During the days the department was aware of the lapsed insurance, surrounding departments responded to calls.
