What do firefighters do when there is not a fire?

Firefighters are always ready to respond, but some civilians often wonder what they do in their downtime

A question posted recently on Quora asked, “What do firefighters do when there is not a fire?” Dan Cook, a 32-year fire service veteran, gave his opinion on the topic below. Check it out and add your own thoughts in the comments.

0800 hours: Vehicle checks and inventories for driver, station cleanup for firefighters. Read logs and memos from previous shifts for company officer. Everyone tries on personal gear and breathing equipment.
0930 hours: Morning break and discussion with all members on equipment, station and department status.
1000 hours: Training slot. This is usually some type of drill or classroom session.
1200 hours: Lunch
1300 hours: Fire prevention inspections
1500 hours: Paperwork for company officer, clean up and physical fitness or personal study for firefighters.
1700 hours: Stand down or more of above. This is a personal choice.
