GAITHERSBURG, Md. — ABC7 has confirmed that both federal and local authorities are investigating the possibility the making of illegal drugs caused an explosion on federal property in Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County Police say the explosion happened around 7 p.m. Saturday night at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which is located on a large piece of property that can be seen from I-270. On Tuesday the Drug Enforcement Administration confirmed to ABC7 it is investigating along with MCPD.

Police said no one has been arrested but their investigation is not over. They say they are investigating whether a chemical reaction from the making of illegal drugs caused the explosion.
