PULASKI COUNTY, Ind. — A volunteer firefighter died and his pregnant wife were injured when the motorcycle they were on crashed Saturday.

Firefighter Michael Z. Shorter, 26, was riding his motorcycle with his wife, Brandi Shorter, 28. Police said the two were thrown from the motorcycle after a deer walked onto the roadway, reported WNDU.

Shorter was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Brandi was airlifted to the hospital and is expected to fully recover. According to Shorter’s mother, the couple had a gender reveal hours before the crash; they are expecting a son.

Officials believe the two were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Shorter was a member of the Star City Fire Department.

“A devoted husband, a loving son, an incredible friend … a firefighter in every sense of the word,” Shorter’s mother, Tracey, posted on Facebook. “He not only saved his wife and unborn son, his selfless gift of donating his organs will benefit eight more people in Indiana.”

Shorter was an organ donor; he has been matched with at least five recipients.

“He will live on in so many ways,” Shorter’s mother said.
