OHATCHEE, Ala. — Tracy Sanders, chief of the Mount Olive Volunteer Fire Department, was killed Friday in a three-vehicle wreck in Ohatchee, according to officials.
The wreck occurred around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Mudd Street and Alabama 77, State Trooper Chuck Daniel wrote in an email.
Sanders, 44, was traveling north on Alabama 77 and yielding to southbound traffic to turn left when she was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer, Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown said by phone. Sanders’ vehicle then collided with another vehicle in front of her, Brown said.
Sanders was in a Mt. Olive brush truck when she was hit, Brown said.
“She was not responding to a call but she was on official business,” he said.
Sanders was transported to Regional Medical Center in Anniston and later died there from her injuries, Brown said, and was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m.
Brown noted that Sanders was a close friend.
“She was one of my students,” said Brown, who is the EMS program director at Gadsden State Community College. “She devoted most of her life to being an EMT and as fire chief.”
Sanders leaves behind a husband, Randall Sanders, two daughters and a grandchild, Brown said.
