LODD: Mich. fire captain dies while leaving firehouse

SOMERSET CENTER, Mich. — A fire captain was found dead in his vehicle Tuesday outside his firehouse.

Somerset Fire Capt. Fred A. Newton Sr., 66, was discovered by fellow firefighters in his car after he went to warm it up before leaving the station, reported USFA. Firefighters arriving at the station thought Capt. Newton fell asleep. When they knocked on the window and opened the door, they found he was not breathing.

EMS crews arrived at the scene to render aid and transported Capt. Newton to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Prior to his death, Capt. Newton had responded to three emergency incidents during his shifts.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
