PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md.— A man who fatally shot a firefighter that was responding to a 911 call pleaded guilty to weapons charges Monday.
Darrell Lumpkin, 62, shot and killed firefighter John “Skillet” Ulmschneider, 39, while he responded to a 911 call at Lumpkin’s residence in April. Firefighter Kevin Swain, 19, was also shot, but survived. Lumpkin also shot his own brother, telling police he thought the men were intruders.
Ulmschneider, a 13-year veteran, was transported to the hospital, where he died of his injuries. He left behind his wife and young daughter.
Lumpkin was not indicted for Ulmschneider’s death, reported the Washington Post. Should he be convicted for illegally possessing a weapon, he faces up to 15 years in jail.
He will be sentenced March 31.
