LONDON — A veteran firefighter was arrested and accused of looting in the wake of the deadly Grenfell Tower fire.

The Sun reported that police arrested the firefighter after an investigation into stolen cash from apartments in the tower.

“The suspicion has always been the thief worked in some capacity for the emergency services,” a source said. “A senior firefighter was arrested a few weeks ago. It caused shock.”

Families of the victims were furious after hearing about the looting, saying the suspect was “stealing from the graveyard.”

The suspected firefighter denies the allegations and was released from police after initial questioning, but remains “under investigation.”

“You can’t sink lower than to steal from the victims of Grenfell. Whoever was responsible has let down the heroes from the emergency services,” police said.
