Australian firefighter suffers fatal heart attack at fire

Fellow firefighters tried to save Capt. Paul Sanderson, 48, but were unable to revive him

The Sydney Morning Herald

NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia — A volunteer firefighter who died of a suspected heart attack while battling a blaze in the Hunter region has been named as Deputy Captain Paul Sanderson.

Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said there was sadness right across the firefighting community following the death of the 48-year-old grandfather, who was a 20-year veteran of the service. Sanderson was helping to contain a five-hectare bush fire at Stanford Merthyr, near Cessnock, about 7 p.m. on Thursday when he collapsed from a suspected heart attack, the Rural Fire Service (RFS) said.

Fellow firefighters tried to revive Sanderson, who was the deputy captain of North Rothbury Fire Brigade, before paramedics took him to John Hunter Hospital, but he could not be saved.
