GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. — Under the shadow of the flag and a cross, Lt. Jordan Howard’s gear was memorialized outside the North Greenville Fire Department, Thursday.

An 8-year veteran of the North Greenville Fire Department, Howard was scheduled for a 24 hour shift but he’d never arrive. Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis said he was struck and killed on his motorcycle by an out of control driver fleeing from police.

“This is a shock. I mean, here Jordan was coming to work,” said fellow North Greenville firefighter Dwayne Duncan. “His goal coming to work today was to help somebody else.” It was something Howard did best, according to Duncan. Standing just feet from a makeshift wooden cross and Howard’s gear, Duncan worked through his shaky hands to remember the man he considered his brother.
