MIAMI — Two men, including a city of Miami firefighter, were killed in an early morning shooting in Brownsville on Saturday after attending a wake.
Firefighter Chadrick G. Davis, 23, a two-year veteran of the department, is the son of retired Fire Lieutenant Malcolm “Chip” Davis and the godson of Fire Chief Maurice Kemp.
“Another act of senseless violence and this time it hits home for our first responders. We lost not only our brother firefighter but the fire chief lost his godson. We watched him grow up and follow in his father’s steps.”
The second victim has been identified as Sir-Ernest Williams, 22.
The two were fatally shot around 1:30 a.m. after attending the family gathering at a home at 4331 NW 31st Ct. They were outside the house when someone began shooting. They both were pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.
The wake they were attending was reportedly for Williams’ best friend, killed earlier in the week, CBS4 reported.
“They was burying his best friend today,” said Maxine McKinnon, Williams’ grandmother. “Now they got to bury him. He got a baby on the way, yeah. He just had a reveal shower last week, Saturday. And he was there, and his friend who got killed, he was supposed to be the godfather. And they killed him.”
About 25 firefighters in uniform lined up along Northwest 19th Street and 10th Avenue at 11 a.m. Saturday to pay their respects to Davis, who had just celebrated his birthday earlier in the month.
“Another act of senseless violence and this time it hits home for our first responders,” said Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll. “We lost not only our brother firefighter but the fire chief lost his godson. We watched him grow up and follow in his father’s steps.”
The city of Miami issued a statement Saturday morning.
“I am very saddened by the loss of one of our firefighters and the continued senseless violence in our community,” said Miami City Manager Daniel J. Alfonso. “My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and to all of our firefighters.”
