WINDSOR, Mass. — The Hinsdale (Mass.) Fire Department is mourning one of their own following a fatal one-car crash late Saturday night.
The Berkshire Eagle reported that a witness saw a Toyota Camry, driven by firefighter Nicholas Daniels, roll over on a state highway around 10:30 p.m.
The witness alerted a trooper, who responded to the scene and found the 26-year-old volunteer firefighter was thrown from the vehicle.
Daniels, the only occupant of the vehicle, wasn’t wearing his seatbelt when the crash occurred, according to state police.
The road was closed for five hours to allow troopers to determine the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.
Hinsdale Fire Chief Larry Turner said Daniels’ death has stunned his department and the town as he was well-liked and on the verge of taking a state test to become an EMT with the town’s ambulance service.
“He was just so gung-ho about being an EMT,” Turner said. “He would do extra training as a firefighter and took the initiative to learn. We need more young people like him.”
