HANOVER, Mass. — A firefighter-paramedic died Sunday from injuries sustained from falling off a ladder at his home.

Gregory Hawes was doing yard work last week when he fell off the ladder; he was hospitalized and listed in critical condition.

“It’s hard enough that it happened and happened to one of our own,” Hanover Fire Chief Jay Cavallaro told FOX 25. “But it brings it to another level when it’s your guys going to the accident and treating him.”

Hawes’ colleagues responded to the call and transported him to the hospital in a department ambulance.

“Greg was a good firefighter, a compassionate paramedic and a great person. Greg made a lasting impression on all of us and he will not be forgotten,” wrote the Hanover Fire Department in a statement. “We ask that you keep Greg, his wife and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Hawes worked for the Hanover Fire Department since 2014, reported the Washington Times.
