Firefighter Furman “Mitch” Hanna was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. — An off-duty firefighter died after a motorcycle accident Tuesday afternoon.

WMBF reported that the collision happened when a 63-year-old man attempted to make a left turn onto a private driveway in front of a motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, firefighter Furman “Mitch” Hanna, 31, was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries, according to the report.

“Today we lost a firefighter in an off-duty vehicle accident. He was fatally injured while operating his motorcycle on Enoch Rd. He was a senior firefighter with our department for over nine years,” stated Horry County Fire Rescue official Brian VanAernem. “Please keep your thoughts with his family and ours.”

The crash remains under investigation.
