ST. LOUIS, Mo. — An off-duty St. Louis firefighter was fatally injured Wednesday in a one-vehicle crash in University City, authorities say.
The man, 51, died of injuries in the crash at about 6 p.m. Wednesday on Forest Park Parkway, between North Skinker Boulevard and Big Bend Boulevard.
Capt. Garon Mosby of the St. Louis Fire Department said the man’s name is not being released yet. He had been a firefighter for 21 years.
The crash is being investigated by University City police. The crash site is near the St. Louis border, and St. Louis firefighters were among those responding to the scene. The victim’s car rolled over after crashing and trapped the man inside.
Crews got him out and tried to resuscitate him in the ambulance. He died at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Mosby said the man’s fire gear was in the car, and it was apparent to rescuers right away that he was a St. Louis firefighter.
