BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Colleagues and members of the community are mourning the unexpected death of a volunteer fire chief.
Berkeley County Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Worsham, 45, died at his home Saturday, reported ABC News.
“A lot of people sought his advice,” Lt. Michael Shirey said. “There was constantly calls coming in for Jeff from members of the public. He was a fire marshal, a fire inspector.”
Nearly 50 people visited Chief Worsham in the hospital to pay their respects. Many described him as a jack-of-all-trades and a mentor to younger firefighters. Chief Worsham has served as a deputy fire chief and inspector for numerous fire departments, reported J Henry Stuhr Tributes.
“In all of the things he did throughout the county, it was all volunteer, and I think that’s important to remember,” Lt. Shirey said.
Officials have stated that Chief Worsham’s death was related to a medical condition. He died 12 hours after responding to a call, and officials said it is likely his death will be classified as a line of duty death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 17. He is survived by his wife and three stepchildren.
