NEW YORK — A Staten Island firefighter tragically killed in a New Jersey crash early Thursday morning comes from an FDNY family steeped in service.
James Marshall, 43, an Eltingville resident and a member of Ladder Co. 84 in Huguenot, registered 19 years with the FDNY before the car he was driving struck the rear of a tractor-trailer, killing him in the crash on Route 9 at 1:45 a.m, the Advance/SILive.com reported.
He was the son of James Marshall Sr., who had a 23-year career as an FDNY firefighter and heroically worked at Ground Zero in 2001.
The elder Marshall was honored at the World Trade Center Memorial Wall at FDNY headquarters in Brooklyn in 2015, about a year after he succumbed to a 9/11 related illness from his work there.
James Marshall Sr., a U.S. Navy veteran, was assigned to Engine Co. 253 in Brooklyn, then Engine Co. 166 in Graniteville before retiring from the department in 2002 from Ladder Co. 78, Tompkinsville.
James Marshall is scheduled to be buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery in West Brighton on Oct. 13, 2020, according to his obituary.
In lieu of flowers, his family asked that contributions in his memory be made to the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation.
“The department is saddened with the loss of Firefighter Marshall,’' said the FDNY in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
