LESLIE COUNTY, Ky. — A firefighter who helped found a volunteer fire department was laid to rest this week.

Funeral services for Carty Elizabeth Duff, 81, were held Tuesday, reported WYMT. Duff and her husband, Lawrence, were known for helping found the Stinnett Volunteer Fire Department in 1986, according to Memorial Networks.

Duff was remembered by many as a motherly figure in the department; she often cooked meals for firefighters after calls.

“She would go into the kitchen after runs and cook them breakfast,” Stinnett Fire Chief Aaron Whitehead said. “She just will be missed.”

Duff, an advocate for fire training, completed 400 hours of training for a higher certification last week. She also taught fire safety at elementary schools.

“She just kept going,” Phyllis Mosley, a friend of Duff’s, said. “Even as we all got older, she still kept going. She didn’t want to be a ‘sit on the sidelines’ kind of person. She just wanted to do it.”
