WEST WEBSTER, N.Y. — His head bowed, a bronze firefighter kneels with his chin resting on folded hands atop his fireaxe, lines of grief and sorrow etched forever into his pensive face.
Before him, an obsidian granite slab pays tribute to four fallen firefighters from the West Webster Fire Department.
“This memorial will be a permanent reminder of their heroism and will to help others,” said firefighter Ted Scardino, injured last Dec. 24 when a gunman ambushed first responders arriving to extinguish a car fire on Lake Road. Killed that day were West Webster firefighters Mike Chiapperini and Thomasz Kaczowka. A memorial in their honor was dedicated Sunday.
