BEAVER, Pa. — Three firefighters were injured in a two-alarm fire in Freedom on Sunday morning, Beaver County dispatchers said.
The fire was reported about 7:30 a.m. at a multi-family house in the 400 block of Fifth Street, dispatchers said. After firefighters had entered the building, a hole opened up in the floor beneath volunteer firefighter Terry Specht, 54, of New Sewickley, and he fell in up to his shoulders, said Pine Run Volunteer Fire Department Chief Darren Moldovan. Another firefighter suffered a sprained knee pulling Specht out of the hole, and a third suffered a foot injury on a ladder, Moldovan said.
Specht was initially taken to Beaver Valley Medical Center for treatment of a back injury, but all three firefighters were eventually transferred to UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland. Specht remained there last night in fair but stable condition; the other two were treated and released, Moldovan said.
Departments from Pine Run, Freedom, Conway, Rochester and East Rochester responded to the fire. The fire was out and the scene cleared by 11:40 a.m., dispatchers said.
