ALLENTOWN, Pa. — A longtime customer of Youell’s Oyster House, Constantine Filipos had several reasons to buy the well-respected business in 1984, but one really sold him.

“I tell people I bought the restaurant for the fried, stuffed shrimp,” Filipos said just before noon Tuesday as he stood across from the smoking ruins of his family’s landmark eatery in west Allentown. “I fell in love with the place and loved the food before I bought it.”

A three-alarm fire early Tuesday destroyed Youell’s, sending five Allentown firefighters to the hospital with minor injuries as they struggled with raging flames and sub-freezing temperatures.
