ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — Fifty-five Chihuahuas were taken to Animal Services after a trailer fire in Northeast El Paso, officials said Friday.
Firefighters responded to the fire in the 12400 block of Roadrunner just before 1 a.m. Friday, El Paso Fire Department Inspector John Concha said.
He said a family of three that occupied the trailer were able to evacuate.
The fire may have been caused by an electrical short between the trailer and a nearby shed. It was extinguished in 15 minutes, Concha said. The estimated damage was $6,000.
The rescued dogs were taken to Animal Services on Fred Wilson Avenue, shelter operations supervisor Hugo Navarro said. One of the dogs, a puppy, died en route to the shelter, he said.
“Our intent to do with the dogs is to find homes for them,” Navarro said. “The case is under investigation. Right now we’re working with a rescue group and trying to place them. They’re generally in good health,”
The dogs range in age from less than four months old to 14 years old, Navarro said.
