BALTIMORE — An estimated 80 to 100 cars caught fire in an East Baltimore junkyard Sunday afternoon, the city Fire Department said.
The fire, at Eastside Auto Recycling at 4725 Erdman Ave., escalated to two alarms around 3:20 p.m., fire officials said.
Firefighters attacked the flames with hoses from above, standing on the building’s roof and in a fire truck bucket lift. Despite a heavy wind, they managed to prevent it from spreading from the junkyard lot to any adjacent buildings, Fire Department spokesman Samuel Johnson said.
Roy Fell, a manager at S&G Trucking next door, said he was at Eastpoint Mall when he got a call about the junkyard blaze.
“I jumped in the car to hurry up and make sure [the S&G building] didn’t catch fire,” he said.
Fell said he was most concerned about the propane tanks and truck tires stacked around the trucking company’s business, an explosion risk.
“The wind’s the worst thing,” he said, due to the possibility of the fire spreading. “That’s what we don’t need.”
No one was injured, and the cause is under investigation, the Fire Department said.
