SOUTH LONONDERRY, Pa. — An early morning fire destroyed a garage and two cars in South Londonderry Township Sunday. Two teenagers who were in the home, 30 feet from the garage, escaped without injury, a fire official said.

Campbelltown Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Bill Jurell attributed the cause of the fire at 120 Shady Lane to a flare placed in a groundhog hole in the garage Saturday night. He said the family put the flare in the hole in order to get rid of the groundhog in the garage. He said that the flare sparked a fire in the woodpile and smoldered overnight.

Neighbors at 1209 Smith Lane spotted the fire at 10:06 a.m. Sunday and called the fire department. Jurell said police officers alerted the two teenagers, who were still in bed, and got them out safely. The parents were not at home at the time, he said.

Jurell said 55 firefighters battled the two-alarm blaze, which totaled the garage and two of four cars in it. The other two cars sustained some damage. Siding on the house was melted.

“I’m glad there was not more damage to the house,” he said. “The guys did a good job. We didn’t have any problems with water.”
Jurell estimated the damage between $60,000 and $70,000.

In addition to Campbelltown, fire companies from Lawn, Palmyra and Mt. Gretna along with Lawn ambulance responded to the scene.
