Calif. fire department responds to fire, finds gunman

Reports of a man with a rifle on a roof warranted a SWAT response

BUENA PARK, Calif. — Firefighters responded to a garage fire Sunday, only to find that a gunman was also in the area.

According to the Observer, neighbors notified firefighters that there was a man on a roof with a rifle, prompting a SWAT team to respond to the scene.

Police conducted a house-by-house search for the suspect, with officers from neighboring agencies to assist in the manhunt.

The man was spotted less than half a mile south of the fire, and surrendered to authorities later that night. No injuries were reported.

“We are currently working a situation where individuals are reportedly in possession of firearms. Stay inside, keep your doors and windows locked, and we will update you as the situation develops,” police advised.

Fire Captain Paul Holaday told OC Register that there were “some chemicals” detected from the fire and the hazmat team was called. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

One individual suffered third degree burns from the fire, and was transported to the hospital.
